F.T.I.C. - Who Are We?

Fayette Teen Issues Coalition is a group of concerned parents, teachers, counselors, healthcare professionals, high school students and other community members who are concerned about our youth and their futures. We are especially concerned about the high rate of teen pregnancy in our county.

FTIC is active in the community and provides numerous, helpful resources to area schools, parents, community leaders, etc.  In order to keep our activities going, we need the support from our community. If  you feel that you could give in some way, contact Valerie Crouse at 618-283-1044.

F.T.I.C. Makes Progress

In March 2007, four Fayette County High Schools completed the 10th Grade Healthy Teens Survey.  Overall survey results are available on this website.  Schools that participated were: Vandalia, St. Elmo, Brownstown and Ramsey.  This survey is extremely helpful, because it allows us to see what students in our community are doing, and to see if interventions are needed.  To view this year's results, click on the FAQs and Stats page on this website.

In April 2006, the 10th grade students in four Fayette County High Schools completed another Behavior Risk Survey. Participating schools included: Vandalia, St. Elmo, Brownstown and Ramsey. This survey will give us percentages of high risk behaviors among Fayette County youth.  Results are available for viewing on this website, www.ftic.org .  Click on FAQs and Stats and view the 2006 results today!

F.T.I.C. Helps with TPPP Grant

In 2005, the Fayette County Health Department  received grant monies through the Department of Human Services, to be used towards Teen Pregnancy Prevention Programs in Fayette County. Valerie Crouse, the coordinator for this program, began conducting prevention programs in many county schools in December 2009.  We currently have in place a STD and Teen Pregnancy Prevention Program for 7th grade and High School students for entire schools. The coalition has been working closely with this program and also serves as the advisory board for the grant. For more information about what your school is doing, or how to get involved with this program, please contact Valerie at 618-283-1044.

F.T.I.C. Helping Parents

FTIC has obtained a parent presentation that they hope to present throughout Fayette County.  This program is designed to educate parents on what kids today are doing as well as giving them ways to open the lines of communication.  If your organization is interested in one of our parent presentations, please contact Valerie Crouse at 618-283-1044.

Public Service announcements were recorded earlier this year that were geared towards parents.  They encouraged parents to talk to their teens about  issues such as sex, drug use, teen pregnancy, alcohol, etc.

The Coalition has started putting together parent newsletters that are handed out twice during the school year to parents of Fayette County.  These newsletters contain helpful information for parents who are concerned about their children engaging in risky behaviors.  They give them advice on how to begin talking to their children about such issues.

F.T.I.C. Teens Helping Teens

The F.T.I.C. teens have been very busy in the past year.  We have had a GREAT group of  teens who have been very active in our meetings and projects.  For the 2008 National Day to Prevent Teen Pregnancy, our teens recorded radio ad's, made posters, and took morning announcements back to their schools.  In the past, several teens helped with our local teen center, starting a homework program, and working on giving the place a "face lift" with a fresh coat of paint, new posters, rearranging, and decorations.  If you are a teen looking to give back to your community and want to join our group call Valerie at 618-283-1044! Hope to hear from you!
