I have 2 kids, whose father has left.  I'm living with my parents, but it is not a safe home. I need to know what help is out there that I can apply for. I'd like to get my children to a safer environment, and still be able to take care of them. if you have any suggestions please let me know thank you so much.

Expert:  It is difficult for me to answer your question, not knowing whether or not you are in Fayette County.  You can contact CEFS at 618-283-2631, PAVE at 618-533-7233, or DHS at 618-283-2607.  Depending on the age of your children, you may also qualify for WIC or AllKids, which you can call the Fayette County Health Department at 618-283-1044 and ask to speak to an agent.

What are disadvantages to being sexually active?

Expert:  Disadvantages to being sexually active include, but are not limited to, increased risk of STDs and pregnancy, along with a lack of emotional attachment and intimacy with other individuals.  You can check out additional information in the teen section of the website.

My boyfriend and I were tested 7 months ago for HIV and STDs.  Is it time for us to be retested?

Expert:  It is recommended that individuals who are sexually active, or have "at-risk" behaviors, should be tested every 6 months for HIV/STDs.  If you and your boyfriend have a trusted monogamous relationship, then testing would not have to be done as frequently.  You can call 618-283-3144 and ask for Michelle for more information about HIV testing.

I had sex with 2 guys.  1 of the guys wore a condom during sex, but the condom came off when he withdrew and I had to remove it myself.  Is it possible that I could have gotten pregnant?

Expert:  It is possible to get pregnant during sex, even if condoms are used due to human error.  Yes, you could have gotten pregnant by the condom coming off and allowing semen to possibly enter your vagina, but you could have also gotten pregnant by the other guy not using a condom.  You should take a pregnancy test to confirm a potential pregnancy.

I am 16 years old and have had sex multiple times with my boyfriend.  Can a woman get noticeably loose from sex because of the guy's penis size.

Expert:  A woman's vagina adapts to the size of the penis, so it seems to loosen due to flexibility but does not become loose.

How can I stop getting upset about the small things and make my relationship with my boyfriend work, so that we can both be happy?

Expert:  The first thing you need to do is improve communication and discuss what both of you want from the relationship.  Are you working towards the same goals?  The small things that you are worried over, are they personal to you, such as jealousy, or has there been a breech of trust.  You choose to either work on the problems or to find a new relationship.

What is safe sex?

Expert: When people use the term "safe sex" they are referring to sex with some type of protective method, such as a condom.  We like to call this "safer sex" because if you are sexually active there is no 100% way to prevent STD's or pregnancy.   When used correctly and consistently, condoms can help reduce the risk of some STDs and pregnancy, but are still not 100%. The only way to make sure that you do not get pregnant or get an STD is by simply not having sex.  Also, birth control does not protect you from STDs.

What's bad about abstinence?

Expert: Abstinence is the best way to live your life.  You do not have to worry about getting pregnant at a young age and when you do not want to have a baby.  You also do not have to worry about getting a Sexually Transmitted Disease, including HIV.  There is also the social and emotional sides of sex that teens do not always think about.  Abstinence saves you from the heartbreak that can sometimes come with sex too early.  You might feel pressure within yourself to want to have sex, but if you practice self control and do not put yourself in pressure situations, then you will find that abstinence is a great lifestyle.  For more information, please see the "Teen Faqs" portion of this website: http://www.ftic.org/teenfaq.html.

do you come on your period while on depo?

Expert: Some women will stop periods after awhile of being on depo. It really just depends on the individual.  Some will have very light periods, spotting, etc. However, not having a period can also be a sign of pregnancy. If you think you might be pregnant you should take a test and see your doctor.
